Job description

The Department of Economics invites applicants for 1 position as Tenure-track Assistant Professor (SKO 1352) / Tenure-track Associate Professor (SKO 1011) / Tenured Associate Professor (SKO 1011) in International trade.

The tenure-track positions are fulltime positions for a period of seven years. 

Tenured Associate Professors may apply for promotion to a professorship according to the guidelines of the Faculty of Social Science.

More about the postition

The Department of Economics seeks new colleagues with the potential for outstanding research and high-quality teaching.

The successful candidate is expected to initiate and lead research, supervise, participate in teaching and assessment at all levels (BA, MA and PhD), and to carry out administrative duties in accordance with the needs of the department. 

It is expected that the candidates contribute to a high standard of collegiality and the department’s working environment. 

The assessment of applicants is based on scientific merit, research potential, teaching experience, research leadership, administrative experience, personal qualities, and suitability. 

Emphasis will be placed on research and international publications from the last five years. 

The position will be associated with the new research centre in international economics (NORCIE). Candidates should, when applicable, articulate how they can contribute to and strengthen the centre’s research.

Requirements

  • A PhD degree in Economics by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, and no later than September 30, 2026. 
  • Candidates for a Tenure-track position should have achieved a PhD degree no earlier than 2021 (additional time may be allowed for leave related to childbirth or adoption).
  • Candidates for a Tenure-track Associate Professor position must have a record making it likely that they will qualify for full professorship by the end of their tenure-track term. 
  • Candidates for a tenured Associate Professor position must meet the Department’s tenure- track requirements
  • Qualifications that are compatible with the department's teaching obligations and study programmes. 
  • The ability to contribute to the department's long-term academic development. 
  • A strong research profile that complements that of the department and the ability to establish and lead research projects.
  • Candidates must have fluent written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Residence in or close to Oslo is required, and presence on campus is expected.

Language 
Tenure-track Assistant Professor positions at the University of Oslo require proficiency in Norwegian equivalent to A2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Appointees that are not fluent in a Scandinavian language (Norwegian, Swedish or Danish) must acquire Norwegian skills equivalent to A2 during the employment period.

Tenured as well as Tenure-track Associate Professor positions require proficiency in Norwegian equivalent to B2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The language requirement can be waived if the appointee acquires the required language skills within two years. Within three years of tenure the candidate must be able to actively participate in all functions that the employment requires, including teaching. 

The University of Oslo provides language courses.

Pedagogical competency
Academic positions at the University of Oslo require basic university pedagogical competence. 

Applicants for the tenure-track positions who do not fulfill this requirement on appointment, need to meet the requirements during the appointment period.

Applicants for the position of tenured Associate Professor who do not fulfill this requirement on appointment, need to meet the requirements within two years from commencement.

  • Salary NOK 750 000 – 1 000 000 per annum, depending on qualifications, for the tenure-track Assistant position.
  • Salary NOK 800 000 – 1 100 000 per annum, depending on qualifications, for the tenure-track Associate position.

  • A complete list of research papers.
  • A list of maximum ten research papers which the applicant wishes to be emphasized in the evaluation. 
  • Letters of Recommendation (optional).
  • List of reference persons: 2-3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and phone number).
