The position is for a period of 4 years.

Job description / Project description

The project is part of gigaCCS, where University of Oslo is one of the main aca-demic partners (Sintef lead). The gigaCCS Center will develop excellent research and innovative approaches for carbon capture and storage. The section for study of sedimentary basins at the department of Geosciences at the University of Oslo contributes to the storage work package of this large initiative in collaboration with many other national and international partners. The project is of strategic relevance for the CCS development in the North Continental Shelf as the project aims to provide new fault data and innovative workflows for fault seal analysis.

The appointed candidate is expected to work with fault data both from outcrop studies, reflection seismic data, and boreholes. The candidate will revisit the current fault seal integrity algorithms and will contribute to improving the algo-rithms utilizing deep learning among other methods. A part of the candidate’s job is to contribute to administrative work in the project and actively participate in the communication with other partners and outreach (supported by UiO:Energy and Environment office). In the first months of the position, the candidate should develop a research plan with expected journal publications that needs to be approved.  In addition, the candidate will have some teaching duties to improve their academic skills.   

Qualifications requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

  • Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and public defense are eligible for appointment. 
  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in structural geology with a special focus on fault characterization, both fault geometry and properties. 
  • The applicant should have worked on fault characterization at both out-crop and subsurface scales, using reflection seismic and well data. 
  • The applicant should have some knowledge or experience of deep learning for analysis of geological data, preferably with the use of reflection seismic and well data. 
  • The applicant must hold a valid driver license in Europe and be able to do fieldwork in Norway and abroad. 
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English are required.
