The Position

Department of Physical Performance at NIH is offering a full-time engineer position allocated to our biomechanics’ laboratory. 

The biomechanics laboratory 

The biomechanics laboratory at the NIH is a state-of-the-art facility for collecting high quality research data. Our focus is on understanding human movement in the context of sports performance and injury risk/prevention. The laboratory is equipped with a 24-camera Qualisys motion capture system, markerless cameras, three brand new embedded force plates, a force-instrumented treadmill and EMG system. We have an interest in understanding gait and other movement patterns in diverse populations, including elite athletes, recreational athletes and clinical populations. 

Job Description

  • Management and maintenance of measurement equipment and data storage
  • Training students in standard data collection methods and protocols
  • Support of Bachelor’s and Master’s teaching, including theoretical and practical sessions
  • Organization and management of the biomechanics laboratory 
  • Biomechanics data collection protocol assistance 
  • Training students in Health and Safety protocols of the laboratories 
  • Development of custom-made hardware and software solutions for data acquisition and management
  • Implementation of new software/technologies as they become available (wearables, computer vision, etc.)

Competence Requirements

The applicant should have:

  • University level education in biomechanics, engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with and understanding of 3D gait analysis 
  • Experience with setup, collection and analysis procedures related to research-standard marker-based motion capture systems (e.g. Qualisys) synchronised with force plates
  • Experience with programming within biomechanics
  • Experience with teaching and instruction of students in lab preparation and data collection using 3D motion capture systems and integrated force plates 
  • Good written and oral communication skills in Norwegian (or Swedish, Danish) and/or English

Desirable competences: 

  • Experience repairing and/or customizing relevant hardware 
  • Experience with research and development will strengthen the application
  • Programming competence specifically in MATLAB and/or Python will strengthen the application
  • Experience with markerless motion capture systems

We Offer

The position is placed in code 1087 Head Engineer or code 1181 Senior Engineer depending on competence and experience. Salary is determined based on individual assessment within the following range:

  • for 1087 Head Engineer: NOK 640,000 – 700,000
  • for 1181 Senior Engineer: NOK 660,000 – 740,000
